Post Pregnancy 101: Life After Maternity Leave

Is the idea of going back to work after pregnancy a frightening thought? Try not to get too worked up. With a little planning and preparation you can make your transition back into the working world painless and easy.

Before Returning to Work After Pregnancy

The average female might take around 12 weeks off of work after pregnancy, as part of her maternity leave. During this time you might become very attached to your newborn, making it nearly impossible to leave him or her.

To help ease yourself back into work, follow these 3 key maternity leave tips during your planning preparations.

Maternity Leave Tips

1. Don’t be afraid to talk to you employer

  • Key things to discuss with your boss are: part-time options, working from home, flexible hours, etc. Make sure you’re upfront and have this discussion before your 12 weeks are up.

2. Do your research when it comes to childcare

  • Look to family and friends for recommendations and references. You want to make sure your child is safe and under the watch of reliable childcare professionals.

3. Create a breastfeeding schedule

  • This is very important for all women breastfeeding their newborn. A few weeks before you plan to return to work, set a new breastfeeding schedule that will coincide with your workday, and always remember to utilize a breast pump if you’re working full-time. If you can’t commit to a breastfeeding schedule, don’t feel guilty looking for other options for you and your baby!

Back at Work After Pregnancy

Now that you’re back at work, things might get a little crazy. According to WhatToExpect.com here are a few suggestions to help ensure a smooth transition continues after week one of being back.

  • Always have a back-up plan: Especially when it comes to child-care and breast-feeding. You never know when your babysitter might get sick or when you’ll run out of pre-pumped milk.
  • Get organized: The moment the workday is up you’ll want to rush home to your newborn. Any delays might cause a bit of anxiety and frustration. The more organized you are, the better off you’ll be. Time management is very important in this scenario.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help: The more support the better! Ask family and friends for an extra helping hand when necessary.
  • Take care of yourself: This can be a very stressful time for most women. You want to make sure you’re getting enough sleep and partaking in a healthy lifestyle. Even though you are no longer caring a child, make sure you are eating an adequate post-pregnancy diet to restore all nutrients.
